Long before the Breton stripe became Jean Paul Gaultier's trademark, the striped top was French naval uniform - with each of its regulation twenty one stripes representing a Napoleonic victory.
Fast forward a century, our range accompanying the Gaultier show at the Barbican (open until 25 August) plays around with the Gallic motif.
